Building Facts

Greenwich House was constructed in 1954.
Displayed here are the pages of the original sales brochure. Below see images of the site prior to the construction of our building. (Thanks to neighbor Tony Hamablet for locating these.) Go to nyre.cul. columbia.edu/items/view/36278 to download or to see larger views.

The building was converted to a cooperative in 1983.  It has 117 apartments, 106 of which are owned by individual shareholders.  It is a fireproof, concrete and brick structure.

From its opening in 1954 to 2010, the building superintendent was either Tony Dias, Jr. (1978--2010) or his father Antonio Dias (1954-78).  The consistency of care and intimacy of knowledge has kept the building well-maintained.

16th Street looking west at a late 19th century procession in front of Xavier.  Greenwich Savings Bank, which our building replaced, is visible on the corner, with the elevated train visible beyond, on 6th Avenue.  (Click for history)

Greenwich House was constructed, on the spot where the Italianate Greenwich Savings Bank had stood.  The bank had moved here to its building on this spot in 1892. Just prior to construction of our building, the bank moved its quarters to 14th Street, where HSBC now resides.

This photo was taken from the west side of 6th Avenue, shortly after 1939, when the 6th Ave. elevated was razed.  Xavier is visible behind the bank.
